The Kosteras – A Brief History

Ahead of the September Race Meet and the coveted Kostera Cup, we take a look back at this influential family and their time in motorsport.

Stuart Kostera Snr started racing at Caversham motor racing circuit in a Ford Anglia 105E before he progressed to an Elfin ANF 1.5l open wheeler and set inaugural lap record at Wanneroo of 1 minute 9 seconds (this was equalled latter by Mike Tighe). Stuart sat on the WASCC committee at the time of transition from Caversham to Wanneroo which was an exciting time for the club and a move Stuart was passionate about for future generations.

He remained an enthusiastic motorsport competitor, partnering with Stan Starcivich for the 6 hour Le Mans at Wanneroo in the Big Banger Sports car. It was in later years he acquired the ex-Don Sullivan – Frank Matich SR3 which he raced at Wanneroo and eastern States circuits as well as winning the Australian championship and numerous state championships in WA, NSW, VIC and SA.

Kostera Snr retired from circuit racing in 1982 and took up classic rallying in a Lotus Europa where he proved to be a fierce competitor in Targa Tasmania, Classic Adelaide and WA events. He also competed in Several Australian / Wynns safaris claiming podiums in Production class in a Mazda B2600 4×4 ute. The icing on the cake though was competing in the London to Sydney marathon rerun in a trusty Holden Kingswood – what a way to represent the Aussies!

After retiring from competition, Kostera Snr became a regular CAMS steward at Wanneroo and also the Australian GP and International events. He was elected to the CAMS board and committed to that for several years.

The passion for motorsport has continued to run through the veins of the Kostera family with Stuart Kostera Junior, now a familiar face and competitor at WASCC.

Kostera’s Tyre Service was appointed Dunlop state distributor for Motorsport tyres in 1987 and has provided the tyre fitting service to the competitors at nearly every race meeting since. Kostera’s Tyre Service has now expanded into Perth Motorsport Tyres, not just selling Dunlop but also Hankook, Toyo, Hoosier, Avon and Michelin competition tyres.

The Kostera family currently support F1000’s and Streetcar categories.
