Circuit LED Panel Installation at Flag Points

During 2024, a set of basic red flashing lights were installed at several flag points. Having these lights meant more cars per session were allowed on track on WASCC Tuning Days. The lights proved to be reliable, clearly visible, easy to operate and effective in slowing the cars down in the event of an incident on track

The next step was to have a complete set of lights, at all 11 flag points. But instead of using single colour LED’s, an LED panel with a matrix of RGB LED’s, each capable of displaying any colour, was a better solution and based on the FIA standards for circuit light panels. After developing an initial proof-of-concept panel, 11 more panels were constructed.

Full course control of the panels is via wireless communication from 2 control boxes, one in Race Control and one in the CAT Tower. Race Control officials can activate the safety car or red lights on all panels instantaneously using a simple mobile app. In addition, flag marshals are provided with a control box for local activation of the yellow, double yellow, green and blue lights.

Installation of the panels occurred during February with initial testing during the Tuning Days. The panels, wireless controllers and marshal post buttons were ready just in time for their first event, the Night Masters race round. The panels worked as intended, both by Race Control and the flag marshals, with several major incidents requiring the safety car or red light operation and minor incidents requiring local yellow or double yellow light operation. The panel visibility was very good, especially at night!
