After the thrilling end to the much interrupted 2020 WA Sporting Car Club season at Wanneroo Raceway, the covers are ready to come off for the 2021 season with a confirmed 145 entrants ready to battle it out at Wanneroo Raceway this Sunday 28th February.
The usual two day event has been condensed down to a one day event to maximise the on track activity by the looks of it with a tighter schedule across all categories pencilled in.
Following on from the Vees will be the Pomtec Motorsport Excel Cup. Pomtec Motorsport supplies and assists a lot of the drivers and the category already and owner Tom Hamlett felt it was a natural extension to sponsor the category. Cameron Atkins and Anthony Jewell will both be back on track for the first time since an incident in October ended both their seasons, albeit Cameron did come back in a new car for the final round but ran at the back of the pack. With the category moving to the Supashock controlled suspension by 2022, the field should be closer than ever with the Nationals set for later in the year.
Newly minted Perth Motorsport Tyres FSR series is the expanded F1000 category which will now have Radicals, Open Sports Cars, F1000s and more on track. The initial field is set to be around the 12 mark but there are hopes some cars will be dusted off later in the year and return to racing now they have a championship category to compete in. Formula Ford racer Andy Malkin is returning to a Radical this year after coming 5th in the 2019 Arise Racing Driver search and will be keen to put in a good show.
Rightway Industries Saloon Cars where the racing is classic Holden vs Ford, in fact the ONLY place you can see real Holden vs Ford racing anymore, is fielding the largest grid with 31 cars split over two categories. 17 year old Chase Hoy is stepping up from the PRO-AM class to the PRO class with a new car for him being built in the off season, Grant Johson, Mat tMartin, Brock Ralph, The Boleys and all the usuals are back again.
An amalgamated field of McDonalds Street Cars, Make Smoking History Improved Production Cars and the new (to WA) category of Production Cars will be interesting to watch. Generally all the drivers in these categories are very aware of their surroundings so the amalgamation should allow for some great racing intra category as well as letting spectators not just watch a track with only a few cars on it at a time. Long time racer supporter Brent Peters from LUXE Performance still isn’t keen to get racing and has handed the keys of his Skyline over to Hyperdrive’s Andy Stevens.
The lumbering steel giants are back for Round 1 with the Resolute Security Services HQ Holden guys suiting up for another year of panel rubbing racing. Wether it is 3 wide through turn 1, some hairy moments in the “esses”, undertakes in the wet through the “bowl” of turn 6 or the cool down lap two wide salute to the fans, the HQs are a firm fan favourite.
Finally the G&V Earthmoving Historic Touring Cars will round out the on track action for the day with a great mix of historic cars on the track. 5 Morris Coopers’, Torana XU-1s, Mustangs and more will be out showing that just because they belong in a museum, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be driven like they don’t!
As for spectators, they are welcome at Wanneroo Raceway and entry is only $5 per car. Pit walks and up close parking will make for a great day out!
