Raceway and Facility Update Report – September 2025

As members would be aware Perth has just experienced its wettest winter in 50 years, and this weather has certainly set some significant challenges in terms of Raceway operations. In particular, the massive amounts of water run-off has sculpted channels and humps in several key location’s trackside. To remedy the situation, we’ve hired a road grader with operator to spend two days fixing these areas.

Other matters of maintenance and planned improvements are listed below

1. Admin Building Lift
This was made unserviceable by a lightning strike in early August.
After a long wait for parts, it’s now been fixed at considerable cost – invoice is yet to be received.
This incident has highlighted a possible lack of appropriate lightning protection for the Admin/Race Control building, and this matter has been referred to the Club’s Electrical Contractor.

2. Collapsing Paving adjacent to Fire Extinguisher shed
Paving appears to be collapsing on front of Fire Extinguisher shed and adjacent garage. Likely soak well and/or septic tank need maintenance or replacement. We are planning to investigate this post the next Race Meeting to establish just what is causing the subsidence and remediate the area.

3. Installation of compliant access ladder to CAT Tower (Infield top of Hill)
A new ladder will be installed once fine weather and track access is available. Tower is used for circuit monitoring by some venue hirers (not our Club) and supports both Timing and Communications hardware at WASCC events, thus it is accessed frequently.

4. New flag roofs flag points T1 & T5
Installation on FP @ T5 completed and judged to be a significant improvement. Installation on T1 FP requires a new debris fence. Both the roof and fence have been fabricated but installation not scheduled by contractor until late October. Additionally, we are looking at the practicality of Perspex windbreaks on other flag points which can’t be fitted with metal units for operational reasons.

5. Replacement Tyre Walls
20’ Container at Kostera’s Tyre Service Kalamunda now full of suitable tyres (Kostera’s will take back any that can’t be used) and will shortly be delivered to Raceway. The plan is then to both store the tyres and construct the new bundles in the triple garage at the south end of the infield garages. Once we have built sufficient bundles the plan is to completely replace the original bundles at the southern end of the pit wall.
This will not be such a cheap exercise as the only possible way to dispose of the old tyres will be to pay the $4 or $5 per tyre disposal cost.

6. Weighbridge area.
We are awaiting quotes for replacing the metal roof over the weighbridge (has rotted through in places) and over the adjacent old “HQ” shed. The overhanging trees will have to be professionally trimmed or removed in conjunction with this work.
Additionally, the WASCC ground staff are installing custom made bollards and new chain mounts to secure the weighbridge from vehicular traffic on non-race days.

7. Starters Box
This will be refurbished over the summer break. A new floor and better sun protection is planned.

8. Raceway Vehicles
After many years of service our old blue tip truck has finally had to be retired. the Club has purchased a used Isuzu tipper with a Hiab and both rear and side tipping facility. Additionally, thanks to AAAC Towing we are replacing the Colorado recovery ute (manual transmission) with an automatic LDV dual cab vehicle which should make life substantially easier for our recovery volunteers.
