WA Sporting Car Club releases 2022 calendar of events

Wanneroo Raceway is set to be the heart of motorsport action in Perth with a jammed packed 2022 calendar featuring six rounds of the WA Circuit Racing Championship, 13 rounds of the WASCC Tarmac Sportz Series and eight Driftwest events.

The venue is also scheduled to host major events from other organisers such as the Repco Supercars Championship, Motorcycle Racing Club (MCRC), Arise Racing, D1WA, Powercruise and more.

Venue operator, the WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC), has worked hard on finding suitable dates and formats for Club events while also working with other providers to ensure there is a diverse array of available motorsport options for participants to choose from in 2022.

WA Circuit Racing Championships

The WASCC circuit racing season will run from late February to November and will comprise of six rounds. These rounds will all include two days race meets with February and November events featuring the visually spectacular racing under lights for the Nightmasters format.

WASCC Competition and Events Committee Chair Justin Chaffey said there were several advantages to two day meets which prompted the Club to move completely to the format.

“The 2021 season was a mix and mash of both two day meets and one day which gave us greater insight into the pros and cons of both formats,” said Justin.

“We feel that two-day format presents something for everyone. For competitors, there is the greater spacing between Championship rounds, fewer clashes and the summer offseason is maintained.

“For our volunteer officials, it will mean shorter and more enjoyable days and with the club improving its camping facilities those wishing to camp will be able to take advantage of the social atmosphere in the downtime.

“As organisers, the advantage for us will be that the event preparation will be more efficient and cost effective.

“We’re looking forward to the 2022 racing season. The Club will be focused on delivering an improved atmosphere and experience for drivers, officials and motorsport fans.”

WASCC Tarmac Sportz Series

The WASCC Tarmac Sportz Series is back for 2022 with 13 events to satisfy the large fan base of speed event participants.

The Series is comprised of four different disciplines – Time Attack (circuit sprints), Point 2 Point, Time Challenge (regularity) and Hill Climb. These events are designed to attract and satisfy motorsport participants of all levels of experience from novices in their daily driver to a circuit racer in their competition vehicle.

Participants in the Point 2 Point and Hill Climb events have a choice of two categories depending on how they would like their results to be calculated. The Time Challenge category will see participants results calculated against a self-nominated time, whereas the Time Attack results are calculated and then ranked by fastest outright time.

DriftWest

Drift fans have not been forgotten about in the Club calendar with five Driftwest Practice Nights and three DriftWest Practice Days scheduled for 2022. The Practice Days scheduled for January 22 and April 25 will be a Jack’s Hill events, with the remaining events being held on Wanneroo Raceway’s infield skidpan and main circuit.

Offering a full calendar of opportunities to participate in motorsport needs the assistance of a large group of volunteer officials. A State race meet needs a minimum of 70 volunteers to run and in a climate where everyone is time poor, it can be challenging for the Club to find the help needed. WASCC Competition and Events Chair Justin Chaffey asks drivers to consider officiating at rounds where they aren’t racing.

“While the Club is focusing on growing our official base, in today’s volunteering climate we do need the assistance of our drivers and members to ensure these events have enough hands-on deck to go ahead,” said Justin.

“Most of us who drive say thank you to the officials regularly – but the best way to say thanks is by helping out on the event days you aren’t driving or by getting family or friends involved.

“It’s also a great opportunity to see the sport from a different perspective and get to know the official’s team who share the same passion for motorsport.”

The 2022 calendar of Club events is available on the website via this link. The full listing of events including those scheduled from outside organisers will be loaded onto the Wanneroo website in the coming weeks.
